SHEEPSKIN MINERAL TANNING CLASS:

Friday, November 29- Monday, Decemeber 2

This is a 4- Day Workshop and here is a rough schedule:

FRIDAY: 11:30am - 4pm -Intros, Orient, scrape hides + Rack in Frame

sATURDAY: 10am- 3:30pm- Check-ins, Scrape, Pumice + Soften

SUNDAY: 10am-3:30 pm - Check-ins, soften + Pumice

mONDAY: 10am- 2:00 pm - Brush + Pot luck + Cut Out frame

Cost-Sliding Scale: $300- 475 usd + tax (includes your take home sheepskin)

This workshop is a great opportunity to experientially learn how to transform a sheep hide using the natural mineral tanning method into a beautiful, soft, cozy sheepskin rug, blanket, +/or textile for some future sewing projects!

This workshop will be great for hide tanners at all levels, farmers, shepherds, textile artists, bodyworkers, cultural workers, caregivers, Activists, or really just anyone really! You do not need to have any prior experience or knowledge, and if you do can’t wait to hear about it!

All tools and materials will be provided.

This is a unique opportunity to build community and intimacy with place, ancestors, and land-based embodiment practices. I can’t wait to share this with you all!

Food+ Amenities: Please bring your own lunch, snacks supplies, and water bottle! There is a composting toilet and a places to refill your water.

What to wear: Please check the weather and pack accordingly with lots of layers for the  surprise high desert weather patterns! We will be outside for the entire weekend and in a part- shade area, so bring a hat, warm clothes, sunglasses, and sunscreen if needed depending on the season.

You will get intimate with a fresh hide! you might get some hide on you, and you will probably smell a little like that and sweat! So wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and/or bring an apron. wear closed toed shoes.

I hope that this experience helps a person appreciate and honor the animal’s life a little more!

Accommodations: A place to stay is not provided but please reach out for recommendations!

Kids//Young Folks are welcome! I love littles and young folks, and they often love running around and participating! and with that being said Use your own discretion. Tanning takes active participation, there are sharp tools around, and it is usually held on farm properties. If you want to know more or have questions reach out! riverinehart@gmail.com

Accessibility:

Part of the work will include being on your hands and knees, using string and needles, working with sharp objects, standing or sitting in a chair for 5+ hours, and using lots of repetitive use of arm motions and your full body to soften and work the hide. If you really would like to participate and some of parts explained above sound difficult, please reach out and we can see if we can come up with creative solutions!

If you would like to bring a friend/partner/family member to help you with your hide throughout the weekend there will be an additional $75 teaching fee. Myself and any helpers at the class will be able to also provide hands on support!

COVID Protocol: This event will be hosted outside; we will check in and we will give each other space! and/or concerns. testing beforehand is encouraged and Please communicate with me if you are feeling sick or covid positive before showing up to class and we will see you at another time!

Refund Policy: There are no refunds, and so you will recieve credit for another class for a future date. There is often a waitlist so there is potential that we can work to find someone to fill your spot with reasonable notice.
